Julia Blackbird’s
New Mexican Café was created by owner Julie Siegfried in
2000.
Yes there is really a Julia Blackbird, it’s me!
With some prodding from my son’s grandma Tuni, the restaurant
became my namesake… she nicknamed me Julia Blackbird many
years ago.
My food is Northern New Mexican, which to me, combines the culinary
explosion of Native American, Spanish & Mexican with a sprinkling
of my farmland upbringing. My favorite ingredients come from New
Mexico like the blue corn meal, Chimayo red, Socorro green, San
Luis valley goat cheese, queso fresco, squash, corn & my beloved
pinones. I’ve been buying my chile from the same farmer
since I was 19 years old, on my first trip to Taos & Chimayo.
I believe in the family farm & supporting the locals.
Julia Blackbirds started out small – barely 1000 sq. ft.
– nestled in a cozy space, right in the hub of the Highlands.
Due to space constraints & the inability to serve alcohol,
I expanded the restaurant in 2005 and moved to a larger location,
just one block east on 32nd from our original digs.
Although its off the beaten path, the new location features a
fantastic off street patio while doubling our in-door seating,
I wanted to keep the kitchen open like it was originally and now
we have the ability to whip up some sultry sangria & margaritas.
In May 2010, we will be celebrating our 10th year as a mom owned
business.
